Valladolid was founded by the Spaniards on the then existing Maya village known as Zaci and became a religious center where in 1552 the Franciscans built the Iglesia de San Bernardino (San Bernardino Church) and the adjoined Ex-convento de Sisal (Convent). These two buildings have been recently restored revealing frescoes around the altars in the church.
West of the town is Cenote Dzitnup, a natural water well discovered in the 1950s. Visitors may enter and go swimming inside the underground pool where there is a hole in the roof of the cave where light enters from above. Dzitnup is located 4 miles west of Valladolid and open daily. Entrance cost is a few dollars.
